I never thought that a cell phone would become one of life's necessities, but like it or not, it has.
As a result, there's a program that will allow people on state or federal assistance programs, such as food stamps or Medicaid to be able to get a free cell phone and 250 minutes per month for free through Safelink Wireless. Any unused minutes from one month automatically roll over to the next month.
There's no contract to sign and no credit check required, and this program is absolutely free.
The rules for qualifying include:
- You must already participate in a financial assistance program.
- Your total household income must be at or below the poverty level, as set by your state or federal government.
- Nobody else in your household is enrolled in the free wireless program.
- You must have a valid U.S. postal address.
The Safelink service includes texting, long distance and voicemail. In other words, it's not a cookie-cutter plan.
This program has been a lifesaver for me after losing my job last year, going into foreclosure and having to go on food stamps.
